Our trip to Seward included a hike to Exit Glacier and was a highlight of our little mini-vacation. The skies were dark gray and the air had a whisper of winter, so our first stop was to buy some head and hand protection. Was I glad we did!
The road to the glacier was a short drive of only about 8 miles. The discussion in the Cress Expedition centered on whether we should or should make the trek given the weather conditions. We reach the consensus that we would go check it out and then decide. By the time we got there, the weather had settled enough to make us that on the adventure. Am I glad we did!
Even before we reached the parking lot, we came upon signs with dates on them. The dates were the historical markings of the location of the glacier. The first one was 1889 and was at least a couple miles from the parking lot.
We pulled, parked, bundled up, and hit the trail.
The first thing I noticed was the earthy smell of fallen leaves.
There is something about the smell. It wasn’t long into the hike before the snow started. Along the trail were more glacier time markers. They were getting noticeably closer and closer even though the interval in years was the same. Another thing I noticed was the evidence left behind. There were moraines, boulders in strange places, and deep scratches on the mountainside were the glacier once flowed.
By the time we got to the glacier itself, we were in the midst of a mini-snow storm. While it did reduce the visibility, we were still able to stand in awe at the foot of the blue glacier. I can’t even imagine the how long that hunk of ice had been there, and out from under it all came a small stream of melted water that winded it’s way past the moraines and down the mountain.
Of course, the best part of the adventure was our
sharing it with JABS (Jesse, Auden, Brahm and Sarah).Even though the babes were too young to fully understand the significance of the glacier. They were real troopers battling the cold and snow. All in all, it was a great trip. I highly recommend it.
